Wow… They really had an amazing group of animators working there. They seem like a close-knit group of friends so they’ll likely end up officially at either Trigger or Khara, maybe they could even end up back at Gainax? But really, either way, they dip their fingers into each others pies all the time regardless. I’m kinda excited to see what the next non-adaptation Gainax produces will be like. They’re all quite young, but that’s not to say they’re incapable. What remains of Gainax’s animators were mostly brought on during the production of Gurren Lagann. She’s also tied to Ghost Rhapsody I believe. She did some initial character designs on Dantalian no Shoka, and has since worked on Mawaru Penguin Drum and Sakamichi no Apollon, neither of which are Gainax shows. There’s also Akemi Hayashi still at Gainax.

Whether or not that’ll actually happen is anyone’s guess. He has been slated to direct Ghost Rhapsody at Gainax since forever. Hiramatsu also did a scene in Idolmaster uncredited ( Miki’s photoshoot in episode 2), but his allegiances probably skew more towards Khara - he did a chunk of character animation in the second Rebuild movie, and directed the JapaconTV opening they did recently. However, Amemiya has worked with Imaishi on both Idolmaster ( the ridiculous mecha sequence in episode 15) and BRS, as well as on shows such as Gundam AGE and Boku wa Tomadachi ga Sukunai, although he has also contributed to Gainax’s currently airing show, Medaka Box. It’s worth noting that both Akira Amemiya and Tadashi Hiramatsu are still “at” Gainax, as is Akemi Hayashi. He did do some work on the second film but no one is even sure what he did (it’s likely to be somewhere in the climax, which also features shots animated by Imaishi and Sushio). Oddly, his involvement in the Rebuild of Evangelion with Khara has been minimal, despite being a mecha animation director on the original show. I imagine in the end he’s likely to find himself at Trigger. He also animated on Idolmaster, a crazy sequence in the second OP (unconfirmed, but it’s probably him) and the final episode. You Yoshinari seemed to join Production I.G? He did a scene in a Pokemon film and possibly animated an explosion uncredited in Guilty Crown, as well as contributing monster and mechanical designs to the Mass Effect anime they’re working on. Imaishi directed the CG action sequences.

Trigger then formed a conglomeration of studios with Ordet and Sanzigen, audaciously called “Ultra Super Pictures” - the first production of which was the Black Rock Shooter TV anime. While that show was airing Imaishi founded his own studio, Trigger, with Masahiko Ohtsuka and Kazuya Masumoto, and they actually produced episode 17, with Yuka Shibata storyboarding and Sushio on animation direction. It was fun to play “spot the Gainax” while watching. Since then Atsushi Nishigori went on to direct the Idolmaster anime at A-1 Pictures, so a lot of the other ex-Gainax animators gravitated towards that, but in a sort of freelance capacity. You never know with Gainax, it could easily be something to do with taxes Of course, Hideaki Anno (Gunbuster, Nadia, EVA, Kare Kano) left some time ago to found Khara and produce the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and Kazuya Tsurumaki (EVA, Kare Kano, FLCL, Diebuster) and Takeshi Honda followed along with him to work on that…īut yes, after Panty and Stocking finished, Hiroyuki Imaishi, and many of his buddies, including the GEEKS group they had formed for the production of Panty and Stocking, all suddenly got up and left. Natealepsy asked: My friend says alot of the people who made Gainax what it is left after Panty and Stocking.
